I love keyboards. I love video game music. I love this version of the Mario Bros. theme song by RJD2.
The videos from the Live at Moog series are making my day. Have a listen to RJD2, Amanda Palmer and (presumably soon) Umphrey's McGee playing in the Moog studio, in Asheville, NC. Even more bands are lined up for this, so I'm going to check back later for more synthy goodness.
My friend, Michelle (a.k.a. Lulu Bonanza), works at New England Comics in Allston, MA. We used to frequent the comic shop as much to buy comics as to hang out with the super friendly employees. Michelle's enthusiasm is completely infectious, and she always has lots of recommendations for every genre, age and interest. She's never steared me wrong!
I'm thrilled that Michelle has started her own blog to publish her videos about comics: lulubonanza.blogspot.com They're silly and she admits that they're "a little odd", but that's why I love them! She's not doing this because she's getting paid for it, or anything like that. She's just sharing her love of comics, which shines through beautifully.
Go, Lulu Bonanza! <3
Also, she's totally right about Bone, by Jeff Smith. Read it! Get it from your local comic book purveyor, or www.boneville.com. Read more...
Die Antwoord (which means "The Answer" in English) is a South African rap group, the likes of which I've never seen before. Never has a mullet looked so hot on a girl (or anyone, for that matter). I love their fashion, their "next-level" beats, and their rhymes.
Read more about the band's origins in this BoingBoing article that came out earlier this month, and read the mind-blowing (extremely nsfw!) lyrics to the song "Beat Boy". Their album, $o$, isn't available yet, but you'd better believe that I'll be buying it when it's out.
The video below is "Enter the Ninja", which is extra awesome because Yo-Landi is singing a version of the song, "Butterfly" from Dance Dance Revolution Ultramix 3.
20 FUN FACTS ABOUT DIE ANTWOORD [from their website]
1-NINJA, YO-LANDI and DJ HI-TEK made all their music, music videos, video stings, photos, and this next-level interwebsite all on their own with the help of some good friends.
2-NINJA was in many weird rap groups before DIE ANTWOORD: The Orginal Evergreens, Max Normal, Fantastic Kill, and Total Confusion on Planet Phunk to name a few. Then one day NINJA tapped into his inner zef and discovered DIE ANTWOORD.
3-NINJA has a secret fairy forest tattoo on left arm that he covers with bass.
4-Just to clear up the rumors: NINJA and YO-LANDI are not in a relationship. They are just good friends. NINJA says: Relationships are fickle, like the relationship you are having with your body.
5-Yo-landi's mom cuts her hair, but she gets her hair dyed at SCAR HAIR. Yo-landi says: It's always important to remember your roots.
6-This next fun fact is dedicated to all the confused retard people out there who hate DIE ANTWOORD but can't stop watching their interweb videos every single fokkin day of their boring lives. DIE ANTWOORD put Puma & Jagermeister logos onto this next-level interwebsite because Puma gives DIE ANTWOORD free clothes and free shoes and Jagermeister gives DIE ANTWOORD free dop. Puma and Jagermeister did not give us money to make DIE ANTWOORD. DIE ANTWOORD was created from nothing using alot of blood, sweat and tears.
7-NINJA likes Dolfins.
8-YO-LANDI likes sexy boys with no front teeth.
9-DJ HI-TEK likes his PC Computer.
10-ZEF is a unique South African term that has been around for fuck knows how long. This term was made famous 10 years ago by a next-level interwebsite called WatKykJy.com.
11-NINJA, YO-LANDI and DJ HI-TEK started DIE ANTWOORD because of WAT KYK JY?
12-JACK PAROW is DIE ANTWOORD'S duk gang$ta kung-fu panda chommie.
13-The 1st time NINJA saw JACK PAROW'S fat rap cap he got goose bumps.
14-YO-LANDI rocks more bling than C3PO.
15-YO-LANDI's best friend is KIMPOSSIBLE who lives in Mitchell's Plain.
16-DJ HI-TEK is a shape-shifting alien from another dimension.
17-NINJA does not sit like a doos with a koki pen and draw every single one of his tattoos on in the exact same identical place every time he has to be in a photo or a music video or a rap show you fuckin idiot, or wait...maybe he does. Jissis!
18-DIE ANTWOORD are busy blowing up faster than the speed of light because they are the freshest, most futuristik rap-rave crew in the world.
19-DIE ANTWOORD raps for the Chosen Ones.
20-Anyone who doesn't like DIE ANTWOORD is a poes.

This video is awesome not only because Terminator 2 is one of my all-time favorite movies, but also for the strange coincidence that I happened to watch it last night before discovering this (via Laughing Squid).
A friend of mine recently sent me a mix CD of a whole bunch of bands she thought I might like. I do have pretty wide musical tastes, but I've been in an "experimental" phase for a while now. I like music that pushes boundaries with the instruments they use (bonus points for homemade instruments, especially of the electronic variety), the chaotic noises they make, and the sometimes loose definition of singing that they employ. But it's still gotta be pop music.
While listening to this mix CD, I was nodding my head as each band played, weighing their merits in my head. When I got to Micachu and the Shapes, I immediately had to listen to it again. And again. And again. I stuck all their songs on repeat and called it a day.
[Here's a live version of my favorite Micachu song, "Curly Teeth"]
Sure, I like moody, angry, bob-your-head introspective stuff. But there's nothing like a song that actually makes me want to get out of my seat, jump around, and then look up the band online to find out how they made that noise.
I don't know a lot about 22 yr. old front-woman, Mica Levi, except that she's a classically trained musician from the U.K., and I want to listen to everything she's ever created. She made a bowed instrument out of a CD rack, fer chrissake!
[Check out more from Micachu and the Shapes on Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/micayomusic
I strongly encourage you to search for more songs and videos around the web. There seem to be quite a few.]

I've always been a huge fan of LEGOs, but I was the type of kid who followed the exact directions on the box and then never dismantled my structures. I bow to those makers who can create their very own design with LEGOs as their medium.
This replica of the Kinkaku-ji Zen Buddhist temple in Tokyo actually pops up out of its "box", and was made by the very talented talapz.
I haven't shared anything random and fun in awhile (what with all the packing, moving, unpacking, losing my mind that's been going on in my world), but I thought you might enjoy this. The music makes me wish I were skateboarding in S.F. right now too.
For Father's Day this year, I gave my dad a solar-powered theremin kit that I picked up at Maker Faire. It took him a while to get around to putting it together, but he finally did it! I'm so happy that he took a little video with his iphone to share with me--and now you!
If you want to learn more about theremins, you can read about them here and on Wikipedia. If you want to purchase your own (totally affordable) solar-powered theremin kit, you can buy one from Clockwork Robot here. (Assembly involves some soldering.)
I almost couldn't contain my excitement over this new project, so I feel like I've been holding my breath until now! Months ago, I got some adorable little slide-top tins from my friend, Lea, who runs a supply shop. I'm sure you've seen these little guys around, usually with gorgeous washi paper adorning their tops.
I didn't really have a use for mine when I bought them, but I've held onto them anyway, waiting for inspiration to strike. Just last week, I thought we should try sandblasting one just to see what would happen. I'm so stunned by the result, that I had to make a little video of the tin to show you!
Not only could I use these for packaging my new earrings, but I could also customize them for other crafty-people. I could do logos, product names (for lip balms and such) or just keep doing my own designs. What do you think? :D

The World's Largest DIY Festival A two-day, family-friendly event to MAKE, create, learn, invent, CRAFT, recycle, think, play and be inspired by celebrating arts, crafts, engineering, food, music, science and technology.
We just found out a few days ago that we've been accepted into the Bazaar Bizarre at the Maker Faire! I'm so excited that we'll get to go on a little roadtrip for our first California event, ever! The show is in San Mateo, which is just outside San Fransisco (as I understand it... I still haven't checked it out on a map). Buy your tickets now!
The Maker Faire is an event that I've dreamed of going to, so I hope I have a little time to check out all the action. There are always loads of fun, technological wonders at the Faire, and I feel inspired just thinking about it! This is what their website has to say about them:
We're hopefully going to be staying with friends, to cut down on our traveling costs. We'll be bringing as much stuff as we can fit into our little car, and I'm going to cross my fingers that we can sell most of it so the ride back to Oregon will be more comfortable.
[This video contains lots of F-Bombs. Don't watch it if you are sensitive to that kind of thing. Also, it's kind of long, but full of AWESOME.]
I like video games. I don't play all that many of them, and I'm usually content to play the same game multiple times. I've learned that I'm kinda picky about the type of game that I enjoy though. I like puzzle games, and hack-and-slash senseless violence types of games. Not so much one-on-one "fighting games", although Dead or Alive is pretty fun. Graphics don't really matter at all. I like Mario World, Zelda, Fable and the X-men games.
I've recently gotten sucked into the world of Ninja Gaiden (for Xbox), and I've been obsessively playing it every day. What could possibly be more fun than fighting evil ninjas and monstrous fiends with sword-chucks (*ahem* I mean, the "Vigoorian Flail"). I die a lot, but that just makes it more satisfying when I win.
I just discovered The Adventures of Duane and Brando, a pair of guys who rap about classic video games, over top of the game's soundtrack. I do love me some video game music, so this was a pairing I couldn't pass up! I really wanted to share their Ninja Gaiden video, but YouTube wouldn't let me embed it here, so hop over to their Myspace page to see it and other videos and songs about Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog and more!
Rupert is fascinated by the simplest things. Most cats learn not to play with fire pretty quickly, and he singed his eyebrows off during the first encounter he had with a candle. I took this candle away after I finished filming (he'd been batting at it for a little while without injury) and went straight for the nearest lamp to stick his face into. He also likes to put his toes into the heater grate.
I didn't realize until later that he'd singed his brow whiskers off again. No more candles around the house unless they're far away from where he can get his little face!

Not sure why, but I haven't been able to connect to or view my website all day. I've gotten two orders through it, so I know it must be working intermittently.
I was meeting all day with my accountant, and now it's too late to contact my hosting service provider. I'm going to cross my fingers that they get it up overnight, or I'll be talking on the phone to them all day tomorrow.
Hopefully that phone call goes better than this one.
As usual, I've been a little busy. We're celebrating my husband's birthday today, which means I'll be baking pie and cooking food I've never attempted before. Our cat was sick for a while (possible allergy to plastic) but we think he's better now. I'm preparing for my new studio equipment to arrive, and I'm getting ready to be slaughtered by holiday stress. I've got my first gallery show next week, and my first wholesale show coming up.
So it's no surprise that I've become entranced by Joanna Newsom's second album, Ys. I know she hates her singing being described as "child-like", but I seriously don't know how else to describe it. Okay, perhaps "elfin" is a better term, or "mystical-fairy-folk-like".
The songs are dreamy and emotive, making me feel both carefree and despondent at the same time. They ramble through long stories about talking animals and magical landscapes. Perfect for taking your mind off your mundane life for a little while.
Here's a video of an older song of hers, Sprout and Bean, which I don't think is nearly as good as anything from Ys, but it'll give you a good taste of her style.
My parents are coming to visit me for the first time in Oregon! They're coming tonight and staying for a week, so I'll be on hiatus until Wed., the 1st of October.
This is their first trip to the Pacific Northwest, so we're crossing our fingers for sunny days. Sean and I will be showing them around the city (Farmer's Market, Saturday Market, lots of shopping areas) and driving out to the Gorge so they can see all those great waterfalls in person. If we have time this weekend, we might take a trip out to the coast, since none of us have ever been there!
If you have any suggestions of stuff to do in Portland, please leave a comment! We won't have a car for two of the days they'll be visiting, (since Sean needs it for work and I thought we could get around on Trimet and on foot). If you know of any good, relaxing stuff to see in the SE or on a busline, please share. We have some great ideas already, but it never hurts to have extra options.

I discovered Spoonflower through a Twitter link a while back, and had to see what the cool name had behind it. Spoonflower is an amazing custom fabric printing site, still in the beta stages. Sign up on their waiting list, then wait for your invitation email (which only took a week or two) then start printing!
I still don't even know what I should do with custom fabric, but it's such an amazing idea! The Spoonflower blog has a ton of inspiring videos of the fabrics they've printed for their customers. I like watching the (intentionally low-res) videos to get inspiration!
One of the awesomest things about Spoonflower is that they intend to open an online marketplace for you to sell your custom-made fabrics! You'd just have to upload your original designs, and then sit back while the throngs of fabric shoppers threw their money at you via the Spoonflower site. Or at least, that's how I'd like to imagine it... :)
I thought that custom printed fabric would be prohibitively expensive, but it seems completely reasonable! Here's the pricing info, directly from their website:
This is of course the MOST-asked question. Below is the pricing for fabric during the beta period, and it applies only to the Kona® cotton from Robert Kaufman. We may adjust these numbers at a later date and pricing will certainly vary between products as we endeavor to introduce additional fabric options.
Swatch (8" x 8") $5.00 Fat quarter (21" x 18") $11.00 1 yard (42" x 36") $18.00 2 yards (42" x 72") $36.00 3 yards (42" x 108") $54.00 4 yards (42" x 144") $72.00 5 yards (42" x 180") $90.00
There is a Russian heavy metal band named ANJ that kept trying to befriend me on a social networking site just because I was a fan of Gogol Bordello. I finally broke down and accepted their friend invitation and watched their hit music video, which turned out to be quite entertaining.
The video depicts Mikhail saving busty Russian lasses from green goo-filled zombies, then bringing Levi's and cola to the newly-freed country. It's totally worth watching in HD.
